My Journey To Lotus

May 1, 2017 By kelle Leave a Comment

Does anyone else have a yoga pose that they always dream of doing? Do you ever look around the studio during a class and feel like everyone else can do it, but for some reason you can’t? For me, that pose is lotus, or even half lotus.

When I started yoga a little over a year ago, sitting with my legs crossed was difficult. I made it a goal to open my hips and I even set deadlines for when I wanted half lotus to happen for me. I felt like being able to sit in lotus was a “yogi rite of passage.” It turns out I was completely wrong. After a couple months of trying to force myself into a pose that wasn’t going to happen, I started to come to peace with my journey to lotus, and my journey through yoga in general.

Yoga isn’t about the poses that our body can do. It doesn’t matter if your neighbor has their legs behind their head and you can’t touch your toes. Nobody wins at yoga. It’s about the journey and what you learn along the way. I’ve learned that forcing yourself to do something ends in frustration. I’ve learned that my body is capable of so much and that I should focus on what it can do instead of what it can’t. I began to let go of my strict deadline and just let my practice take its natural course.

Recently, I was doing some hip opening stretches and decided to try half lotus. To my surprise, I did it. I immediately took a picture and texted all my closest friends who knew that this was a goal of mine. When I least expected it, I could reach a point that I never thought was possible. One of my teachers responded to my picture with the most accurate statement, “you get what you give.”

Whatever pose you are striving for, or sequence you hope to master, give it everything you have. Don’t force yourself, but rather, practice patience and acceptance and always recognize your progress. When the stress, deadlines and expectations disappear, it will surprise you how things fall into place.

Taking Yoga Off The Mat

April 19, 2017 By kelle Leave a Comment

In two weeks, I will be graduating college and moving to New York City. It feels absolutely surreal and a little bit scary. Because of this, I’ve found myself thinking of what I’ve learned during yoga and how I can take my yoga off the mat. After practicing for just over a year and finding a second home at Yoga Mindset, I’ve met so many teachers and other students that have shared their philosophies and thoughts on the purpose of yoga.

GB0A0103 (1)Of course, the purpose of yoga is different for everyone, but there seems to be a common trend: stillness, peace, happiness, and strength. On our mats, we can find stillness in the poses, peace in the heart, happiness in the mind, and strength in the breath. With that, I’ve found that everything that I do on my mat is like a “test run” for life outside the studio.

Along with the warmer weather, spring also introduces new obstacles. For some, that may be graduating college, starting a new job, or moving to a new city. I challenge you to take what you’ve learned on your mat and bring it into your life off the mat. When your brain won’t stop, close your eyes and practice your Ujjayi breath. When you are about to step on stage for graduation, stand in mountain pose and just breath. Whatever it may be, use what you’ve learned in your practice. Yoga can prepare us for those day to day challenges and teach us to welcome them with an open heart.

The Yoga Mindset team has enabled me to work on the very areas I challenge my clients - presence, purpose and peacefulness. I began a routine yoga practice 9 months ago to increase my flexibility. In the past, I had practiced only a few times due to my daughter's interest. After discovering more strength, balance and flexibility through yoga, I am motivated to continue. Being more mindful and calm in my spirit are unexpected benefits of yoga. I am certain that Kelle, Priscilla and Fred have made the difference! They are learned instructors who have gently guided and inspired me on my yoga journey.

  • Anna Grey Smith

I had never felt so welcomed as I did here. The instructors are SO patient, encouraging, kind. They are nothing short of amazing and honestly just make you feel positive and want to be a better person. It truly does live up to being a "judge free" place.

  • Christy Weist

Yoga Mindset is a warm and welcoming yoga studio. The instructors have a sincere depth of knowledge of the history, philosophy, and spirituality of yoga. They welcome everyone offering modifications to poses and issuing challenges when needed. I always leave with a sense of peace and a clear mind.

I am thrilled to have discovered Yoga Mindset! The instructors have such gentle calming spirits which puts me at ease. I leave every class feeling refreshed and renewed and as a nurse I need that renewal. I am stronger, more flexible, and have better balance. My family and friends will tell you that yoga makes me a much nicer person! Yoga Mindset is a space in which students can learn & heal in a non-judgmental open environment. I recommend Yoga Mindset so highly that I am currently working with a local manufacturing facility where I work as a Wellness Nurse to bring Yoga Mindset in-house to help their employees lessen strains and injuries by building strength, flexibility and balance.

I began my yoga experince about 8 months ago at Yoga Mindset to increase flexibility and relieve stress. As a result, it was also a wonderful surprise to see how much stronger and toned my body became through this practice. A bonus has been becoming a part of such a giving and community serving family.

Yoga Mindset is beautiful way to start the day as well as an excellent way to reconnect after a busy day. The instructors encourage and inspire not only in the studio by enabling me to find peace, balance and strength from within but also through their love and care of the entire community.
It is the perfect place to practice physical and mental balance in a positive and peaceful environment. Yoga Mindset is a wonderful growth opportunity - physically, mentally and spiritually - for everyone. You will love the way it makes you feel - inside and out!

While living in NYC, I developed my yoga practice to keep me grounded in a non stop environment. Upon returning to the triad, I was thrilled to find Yoga Mindset and the friendly smile of Kelle Yokeley as she helped get me back on track to a healthier lifestyle in an easy going, welcoming atsmophere!

  • Cathy Hensley

As a new yogi, choosing Yoga Mindset for my first yoga experience has been one of the best decisions of my life. You feel instantly loved and at peace, enveloped in the warmth and security of a judgment free studio.

yoga for all

"I just felt in my heart that yoga was so life changing that everyone needed access to it," said Yoga Mindset owner Kelle Yokeley. "I would tell everyone how incredible yoga was and I always heard from people that they just couldn't afford a $15 or $20 class. The idea came to me during meditation one day; why not make yoga available to everyone, with loving, open arms, even if they couldn't pay for it?"
